The Challenge: Traditional Access Constraints

The Challenge: Traditional Access Constraints

Manual inspection of ageing asbestos-cement roofing presents three critical barriers: high-risk surface fragility, the logistical footprint of physical access equipment, and the heavy administrative burden of Work at Height (WAH) and Permit to Work (PTW) protocols.

Top-down (nadir) aerial survey of an industrial fiber-cement asbestos roof, documenting the condition of weathered skylights and ventilation systems for an Atom Geomatics asset inspection.

The Solution: Technology-Driven Inspection

Detailed oblique close-up view of a complex, weathered industrial warehouse roofing system. Focuses on the extensive gray corrugated asbestos-cement sheets with moss growth, contrasting with a new, reflective silver metal ridge flashing. Key visible system components include prominent metal chimney vents with cowls, skylight sections, and access hatches, framed for detailed analysis.

The Solution: Technology-Driven Inspection

Atom Geomatics was commissioned to deliver a comprehensive visual record of the asset. By conducting a non-invasive aerial inspection, we documented the visible condition of the roofing through high-resolution imagery—bypassing the hazards and operational constraints typically associated with manual roof access.

Critical Risk Identification

Critical Risk Identification

The sub-millimetre audit identified several high-priority observations that ground-based observers could not detect:

  • Drainage Observations: Identified significant standing water in primary box gutters, providing visual evidence of potential drainage issues for further maintenance review.

  • Material Surface Fractures: Pinpointed longitudinal linear fractures and widespread "end-lap" splitting across the facility, documenting the current physical state of the roofing materials.

  • Debris & Static Loads: Located unverified static loads and dislodged roofing components left in situ from previous maintenance activities.

Targeted Maintenance Strategy

Digital drone inspection report dashboard by Atom Geomatics, displaying an orthomosaic of an industrial asbestos roof with color-coded markers for localised defects, observations, and maintenance features.

Targeted Maintenance Strategy

The survey provided the client with a definitive baseline of asset health, allowing them to transition from reactive repairs to a targeted, data-driven maintenance strategy. By digitising the inspection process, we delivered the required assessment while eliminating the substantial costs and administrative burden of traditional access.
